Ghana relies on a compact defensive block and quick transitions, operating out of a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before launching direct attacks. The Black Stars aim to frustrate opponents by clogging the central areas and forcing teams to play wide, making it difficult for any side to play through the middle.

I.Williams guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back five features M.Ashimeru and T.Partey as the central defenders who focus on winning the second ball and clearing the lines. M.Kudus provides additional cover in the central area, ensuring the defensive unit stays close together. On the flanks, K.Sulemana and K.Nuamah act as wing backs. These players must track back to form a narrow defensive block but also possess the stamina to carry the ball forward when the team wins possession.

The midfield operates in a flat four to protect the back five. Abdul Mumin and M.Salisu form a central pairing that works to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle third. Abdul Mumin looks to disrupt the opposition and protect the central defenders. G.Mensah and T.Lamptey occupy the wide areas as left and right midfielders. They are tasked to press in a mid-block and help their respective wing backs when defending wide. This midfield group aims to recycle possession quickly to find the attackers.

Ghana uses a lone striker in L.Ait-Zigi to lead the line. As a pressing centre-forward, L.Ait-Zigi works to harass the opposition back line and pin the last defender. The team attacks through long balls or quick transitions where the wing backs, K.Sulemana and K.Nuamah, push high to provide width. This creates a system where the forwards look to hit in behind on the transition, using the space left by an advancing opponent. The goal is to use the width to stretch the defence and then deliver crosses into the box.

One major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes into the box. The five man defensive line makes the central area extremely difficult to penetrate. Another advantage is the ability to hit in behind on the transition, as the wing backs can quickly move from a deep position to an attacking one. This creates sudden numerical superiority in wide areas during a counter attack.

This formation provides a solid foundation for Ghana to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams that control possession but struggle with quick, direct play.
