Inter focuses on verticality and high intensity using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to control the middle of the pitch and strike quickly once the ball is won. The Inter lineup uses the extra man in central areas to dictate play and create constant pressure on the opposition.

Sommer sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. Behind him, a back three consisting of Acerbi, Bastoni, and Pavard provides a solid foundation. Acerbi acts as the central pillar, dominant in the air and reliable when clearing the lines. Bastoni operates as a ball playing defender who can step up into midfield to progress through the thirds. Pavard provides cover and stability, capable of shifting wide to manage space. This unit defends zonally to squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield works as a central engine designed to dominate possession. Calhanoglu acts as the deep lying playmaker, looking to switch play and find the feet of the strikers. Mkhitaryan links the defensive and attacking lines by driving forward with the ball and winning the second ball. Barella works tirelessly to press aggressively and carry the ball forward into the half spaces. Darmian provides a screen in front of the defense to deny the pivot and pick up runners. To provide width, Augusto operates as an attacking wing back to stretch the defense.

Inter utilizes two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender. Martinez works as a mobile striker who can hold up the ball and combine in tight spaces. Thuram provides runs in behind to exploit the space left by a high defensive line. The two attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. When the team builds in possession, the wing backs push high to create wide overloads, allowing the front two to focus on central combinations.

One major strength is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the team to control the tempo. The ability to press in a mid block ensures that Inter can win the ball back high up the pitch. This formation also offers great flexibility to shift into a back five when defending a lead.

This 3-5-2 formation is designed for teams that want to control the center and attack with speed. It is best suited for games where the opponent plays a narrow midfield and can be exploited on the flanks.
