The midfield provides the engine for the team. Koke operates in the center to connect the defence and attack, often dropping deep to receive and recycle possession with his passing range. De Paul drives forward with the ball to carry it into the final third, while Lino and Riquelme provide the necessary width on the flanks. Llorente works on the right side to stretch the defence and support the attack. This five man unit is capable of pressing in a mid-block to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.

Attacking moves through a partnership of two forwards. Griezmann operates as a second striker in the hole, frequently dropping into midfield to link play and create space. He combines with either Alvarez or Sorloth, who acts as the main striker to hold up the ball or make runs in behind. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and prevent the opposition from playing out from the back. This movement allows for quick combinations in tight spaces.

A major advantage for Atlético is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows them to control the tempo of the game. The team also uses the wide midfielders to create wide overloads and pull defenders out of position. This allows players like Griezmann to find space between the lines.
