Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Svilar · Mancini/Cristante · N'Dicka/Hummels · Hermoso · Angelino/Dahl/Zalewski · Kone/Paredes · Pisilli/Pellegrini · El Shaarawy/Saud/Sangare · Le Fee/Baldanzi · Soule/Dybala · Dovbyk/ShomuRoma focuses on high intensity pressing and verticality through a 3-6-1 formation. This lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and move the play forward with speed to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to use a compact block to control the center of the pitch while using wide players to stretch the defence.
Svilar guards the goal as the starting point for building play. The defensive unit works with a back three consisting of Hermoso as the left centre-back, N'Dicka or Hummels in the middle, and Mancini or Cristante on the right. Hermoso acts as a ball playing defender to help move the ball out from the back. Mancini provides physical presence and aerial strength to defend the box. This back line works as a unit to squeeze the space between the defense and midfield.
The midfield is a dense block designed to dominate the center. Kone or Paredes act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Pisilli or Pellegrini work alongside them to link the lines, with one player often dropping deeper to help the pivot. El Shaarawy, Saud, or Sangare occupies the right central midfield role, while Angelino, Dahl, or Zalewski provides presence on the left. Le Fee or Baldanzi operates as an attacking midfielder in the half-spaces to create chances, while Soule or Dybala provides creativity from the right side.
Roma uses Dovbyk or Shomu as a lone striker to lead the line. Dovbyk acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header during long balls. The attack relies on the movement of the attacking midfielders and wingers to support the striker. Soule or Dybala often cuts inside to find space, while the wider players aim to get to the byline and deliver crosses. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win the second ball.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By crowding the central areas, Roma can intercept passes and win the second ball easily. The ability to shift between a narrow block and a wide attacking stance allows the team to control different phases of the game. High pressing from the front three players creates many opportunities to break quickly in transition.
The 3-6-1 formation provides Roma with a heavy central presence and high pressing capacity. This setup is best suited for games against teams that try to play out from the back through the middle.
