Starting Lineup

Prass · Posch · Wöber · Lienhart · Grillitsch · Seiwald · Baumgartner · Wimmer · Sabitzer · Laimer · Bachmann

High intensity and verticality define the Austria 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move the play forward with speed. The focus remains on overwhelming the center of the pitch to dictate the tempo of the game.

Bachmann stands between the posts in this high risk system. The defensive unit relies on a very high line with Wöber and Lienhart acting as the two central defenders. Operating with only two players in the back line, Wöber and Lienhart must be able to cover large areas and step up to intercept passes. They must be ready to sweep behind the line if an opponent manages to break the first wave of the press.

The midfield is the heart of this Austria formation. Prass and Posch act as a double pivot to shield the defense and help build play from the back. Grillitsch and Seiwald operate in the central engine room to carry the ball forward and win the second ball. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten to connect the midfield to the attack and arrive late into the box. This heavy presence in the middle allows the team to compress the midfield and control the tempo.

The attack utilizes three players to stretch the opposition. Baumgartner leads the line as a central striker to hold up the ball and find space. Wimmer and Laimer act as wide attackers to provide width and pull the opposition defenders apart. These wide players look to cut inside or get to the byline to whip it in for the others. The movement of Laimer and Wimmer creates space for Sabitzer and Baumgartner to exploit the gaps.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By clogging the center, Austria can easily pick up runners and deny the pivot of the opposition. The team also excels at pressing in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. This high pressure makes it very difficult for the other side to play out from the back.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high pressure system designed for dominance. It works best against teams that rely on building play through the middle of the pitch.
