Brighton Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Verbruggen (Steele) · Van Hecke (Igor) · Veltman · Dunk · Hinshelwood (Kadioglu) · Wieffer (Ayari) · Baleba (O'Riley) · Minteh (Adingra) · Mitoma · Rutter (Enciso) · Welbeck (Ferguson)Brighton looks to play with high intensity and vertical movements using a 4-4-2. The Seagulls focus on winning the ball high up the pitch to trigger an immediate attack. This formation is built to play a high press game that forces the opponent into mistakes.
Verbruggen stays between the posts to help play out from the back. The defense sits in a flat back four with Veltman at right back and Hinshelwood at left back. Dunk works as a ball playing defender to help progress through the thirds while Van Hecke provides cover to sweep behind the line. Dunk is dominant in the air and helps the unit hold a high line. His presence allows the back four to squeeze the space and deny the turn to any attacking players.
The midfield uses a central pairing of Wieffer and Baleba to control the middle. Wieffer acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and find the feet of the attackers. Baleba is a carrier who drives forward with the ball to break the line. On the wings, Mitoma and Minteh provide the width. Mitoma is known for his dribbling style and seeks to cut inside from the left. Minteh pushes high on the right to stretch the defence. This unit connects the defence to the attack by moving between the lines.
The attacking line uses a partnership of Welbeck and Rutter. Welbeck plays as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and harass the opposition back line. Rutter acts as a second striker who drops into the hole to link up play. Mitoma and Minteh spread wide to provide width and create one on one situations. The wingers look to get to the byline to whip it in or play a one two with the strikers. This movement creates runs in behind for the forwards to exploit.
The 4-4-2 formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The central duo of Wieffer and Baleba provides the ability to win the second ball and maintain compactness. Wide overloads occur when Veltman or Hinshelwood overlap the winger to create extra numbers. This formation also allows for great speed of transition once the ball is won.
This 4-4-2 formation creates a high intensity attacking presence for Brighton. It is best suited for facing teams that play with a high line and can be caught on the transition.
