Seeking to overwhelm the opposition with directness, Brighton utilizes a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to play with high intensity and rapid verticality to catch opponents out of position. The team aims to pin the opposition back and use the full width of the pitch to stretch the defence quickly. The lineup is designed to win it back high up the pitch and attack with speed.

Verbruggen operates between the posts to play short from the back and start the build up. The defensive unit operates in a flat back four featuring Veltman at right back and Hinshelwood at left back. Dunk and Van Hecke form the central pairing in front of the goalkeeper. Dunk is dominant in the air while Van Hecke acts as a ball playing defender to progress through the thirds. They defend zonally to maintain a compact block and cover space when the team pushes up.

The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Baleba and Wieffer. Baleba acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball into the half spaces, while Wieffer works to shield the defence and intercept passes. Together, they connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must win the second ball and recycle possession to compress the midfield and deny the turn of opposing midfielders.

Up front, the formation employs four attackers to create constant threat. Mitoma and Minteh act as wide wingers who look to isolate one on one situations. Mitoma often cuts inside to use his dribbling, but Minteh pulls wide to stretch the defence. In the center, Welbeck and Joao Pedro or Rutter operate as a two forwards partnership. They focus on runs in behind and link up play between the lines to split the defence with a through ball or find the feet of the striker.

One major advantage for Brighton is the speed of transition when winning the ball. The team can break quickly by feeding the wide players immediately to exploit gaps in the opposition. Another strength is the ability to press from the front in coordinated waves, using the four attackers to trigger a press and force a long ball from the opposition. This allows the defensive unit to squeeze the space and regain control.

This 4-2-4 lineup is designed for aggressive, vertical football. It is most effective against opponents that struggle to deal with rapid transitions and wide overloads.
