The midfield is a five man unit that acts as the engine for the Viola. 8 and 6 form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. 11, 10, and 7 operate in front of them to connect the lines. 8 and 6 protect the center, while 11 and 7 can push higher to press the opposition in their own half. 10 works to receive the ball on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the striker. This midfield group is key to recycling possession and moving the ball from the defensive third to the attacking third.

The attacking phase is built around a lone striker, 9. This player must hold up the ball and fight for position against the center backs. 9 acts to pin the last defender and create pockets of space for the midfielders. 11 and 7 often move into the half spaces to provide width and support the attack. 10 looks to arrive late into the box to finish chances. The team relies on quick combinations and runs in behind to catch the opposition defense off guard during transitions.

A primary strength of this lineup is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. With five players in the midfield, Fiorentina can compress the midfield and make it nearly impossible to play through the center. Another advantage is the ability to shift between a mid-block and a low block depending on the game state. This makes the team very hard to break down.
