Starting Lineup

Torino aims to overwhelm the opposition with a high press and direct, vertical play. This team uses a 2-4-4 formation to push as many players as possible into the attacking half. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to hit in behind on the transition.

Milinkovic-Savic starts in goal to command his area. The defense relies on a narrow two man line consisting of Schuurs and Maripán. These two act as ball playing defenders to play short from the back and start moves. With only two central defenders, Schuurs and Maripán must step up to squeeze the space and set the offside trap. They need to be dominant in the air to win the second ball if the opposition forces a long ball.

The midfield consists of four players working in two distinct lines. Sosa and Pedersen form a double pivot to shield the defense and cover the central areas. Sosa works to deny the pivot of the opponent, while Pedersen looks to intercept and win it back high up the pitch. Ahead of them, Ricci and Ilic operate in the half spaces to connect the lines. Ricci has the ability to carry the ball forward into the final third, while Ilic looks to find the feet of the striker in tight spaces to recycle possession.

The attacking unit is incredibly heavy with four players pushing the line. Vlasic and Lazaro provide the width, with Vlasic looking to cut inside and Lazaro aiming to get to the byline to deliver early crosses. In the center, Adams and D. Zapata form a powerful partnership. Adams acts as a pressing centre forward to trigger a press from the front, while D. Zapata serves as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header. This combination allows the team to attack in waves and split the defence with a through ball.

This lineup offers clear tactical advantages through numerical superiority in the attacking third. By committing four players forward, Torino can pin the last defender and create wide overloads when the wingers pull wide. The ability to break quickly on the transition means they can punish teams that commit too many players forward. They also find success by being able to compress the midfield and squeeze the space during the defensive phase.
