Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Sommer (GK) · Pavard (ZAG) · Acerbi (ZAG) · Bastoni (ZAG) · Dimarco (ADE) · Zielinski (MC) · Calhanoglu (VOL) · Barella (MC) · Darmian (ADD) · Lautaro (ATA) · Thuram (ATA)Focusing on verticality and high pressing, Inter utilizes a 3-5-2 formation to dominate games. This lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition into attacking phases. The system relies on a strong central core to control the tempo and drive the team forward through the middle of the pitch.
Sommer acts as the last line of defense, often playing out from the back to start attacks. The back three features Acerbi, Pavard, and Bastoni, who defend zonally to maintain a compact block. Acerbi and Pavard provide strength in the air and ability to cover wide areas, while Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender to progress through the thirds. When the team pushes up, they set the offside trap to keep the defensive line high and squeeze the space.
In the middle of the pitch, Calhanoglu operates as the deep lying playmaker, dropping between the centre backs to receive and dictate play. He shields the defense and uses his passing range to switch play effectively. Barella and Zielinski form a highly active duo, with Barella driving forward with the ball and Zielinski looking to arrive late into the box. This midfield unit works to press in a mid block and win the second ball to maintain control.
The attack features a partnership of two forwards, Lautaro and Thuram, who work in combinations to split the defense. Lautaro often acts as a pressing centre forward, while Thuram uses his physicality to hold up the ball and find the feet of his strike partner. Dimarco and Darmian provide the width, acting as attacking wing backs who overlap the winger to create overloads. They push high to deliver crosses and stretch the defense, creating space for the central players to exploit.
Inter offers several tactical advantages, such as numerical superiority in midfield when Calhanoglu drops deep. The width provided by Dimarco and Darmian allows for wide overloads, which helps to pull the opposition back line apart. This formation also allows for a very high press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build out from the back.
This 3-5-2 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and rapid attacking transitions. It is particularly effective against teams that play with a single pivot or struggle to track runners from deep.
