SK Sturm aims to dominate through an aggressive and vertical style of play using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. By pushing so many players forward, the team intends to create constant pressure and overwhelm the defensive lines of their opponents.

Scherpen stays in goal to manage the area behind the defense. Wüthrich and Aiwu form a two-man central defense that must play a high line to keep the team compact. They have to be ready to step up to trigger a press or sweep behind the defenders if a long ball is played. Because there are only two central defenders, they must work together to cover the space and intercept any passes that attempt to break the line.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Lavalee plays a holding role to shield the defense and deny the pivot of the opposition. Beside him, Gazibegovic works to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attacking players. Ahead of them, Horvat and Gorenc Stankovic operate in the half-spaces to link the lines. Horvat looks to press in a mid-block while Gorenc Stankovic tries to find ways to play through the lines to reach the forwards.

The attacking third features four players to stretch the defense. Bøving and Zvonarek act as wide wingers who spread wide to pull the opposition defenders apart. In the center, Kiteishvili and Biereth function as a two-man strike partnership. Kiteishvili works to hold up the ball and lay it off to oncoming runners, while Biereth looks to run in behind the defenders to attack the space. They press from the front to force a long ball and win the second ball in advanced areas.

This formation offers massive tactical advantages, particularly the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the final third. The team can press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. Additionally, the speed of transition allows SK Sturm to break quickly and exploit gaps before the opposition can settle.

The 2-4-4 formation is a high-intensity system designed for heavy attacking pressure. It is most effective when facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or those that lack the speed to defend against rapid transitions.
