Starting Lineup

Uzbekistan relies on a defensive and reactive way of playing using a 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams on the break. The team looks to keep a compact block that is difficult to break through, making it a heavy defensive formation designed for stability.

The goalkeeper stands alone at the back to organize the unit. A back five forms the foundation of the defensive line with a central CB, two RCB and LCB, and two attacking wing backs in the RWB and LWB positions. The central defenders act as a wall to clear the lines and win the header, while the RCB and LCB cover the space behind the wing backs. The RWB and LWB are tasked to track back quickly when the ball is lost and push up the pitch to provide width when Uzbekistan moves forward.

In front of the defense, a four man midfield occupies the middle third. The LM and RM provide the width in a flat line, while the LCM and RCM work to control the central area. The LCM and RCM must protect the central defenders and press in a mid-block to stop the opposition from playing through the lines. This group works to win the second ball and immediately look to find the wide players or the striker. The midfield connects the deep defensive line to the lone forward, acting as the engine to recycle possession or launch direct balls.

The attacking phase centers around a lone ST who must hold up the ball under pressure. There are no supporting forwards in the initial lineup, so the ST needs to be able to receive the ball and wait for help. The LM and RM act as wide players to stretch the defence and provide crosses into the box. The RWB and LWB join the attack to create overloads on the flanks, allowing the team to transition from a defensive stance into a wide attacking threat.

Uzbekistan gains a tactical advantage through their ability to maintain compactness when defending. The five man back line makes it very hard for opponents to find space in the box. Another strength is the ability to use the RWB and LWB to create sudden wide overloads in transition, catching the opposition while they are pushed high up the pitch.

This 5-4-1 formation is built for teams that want to deny space and play without the ball. It is best suited for facing dominant sides that control possession and require a low block to frustrate.
