This lineup is built to press high and use wide players to stretch the opposition. The goal is to win the ball back quickly and use verticality to catch defenders out of position.
Mier starts between the posts to organize the defense. A back three consisting of Sanchez, Ditta, and Piovi forms the central foundation. Sanchez acts as the right centre-back, while Ditta holds the middle, and Piovi plays as the left centre-back. These three defenders work together to defend zonally, with Ditta and Sanchez looking to win the header in defensive situations. The unit can step up to squeeze the space when the team presses high.
The midfield operates with two central players and two wide midfielders. Romo (C), serving as the captain, occupies the right central midfield role to control the tempo and link the lines. Lira plays alongside him in the left central midfield to provide balance. On the flanks, Rivero operates as the right midfielder while Rotondi works as the left midfielder. These four players are tasked to cover the wide areas and support the back three. Romo (C) helps to shield the defense while Lira looks to carry the ball forward.
In the attacking third, Cruz Azul employs three forwards. Giakoumakis acts as the lone striker, using his physical presence to hold up the ball and fight for long balls. Charly plays on the right wing, and Faravelli operates on the left wing. The wingers are expected to cut inside to create central threats or provide width to allow the midfielders to push higher. This front line aims to press the opposition back line relentlessly to force mistakes.
One major advantage for Cruz Azul is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger the press. The formation also allows for wide overloads when the midfielders and wingers combine to create space. This setup provides great speed of transition, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition once the ball is won.
This 3-4-3 formation provides a strong platform for high pressing and quick attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
