Ternana aims to control the tempo through a heavy midfield presence and a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the second ball and using a compact central block to squeeze the space between lines. The goal is to dominate the center of the pitch and use vertical passing to catch opponents before they can settle.

Thiam sits in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three where Ruggero acts as the right center back and Folino operates as the left center back. Varnier holds the center of the defense. These three defenders work to clear the lines and maintain a high line to compress the pitch. When the team loses the ball, they drop into a low block to protect the area in front of Thiam and ensure no runners can slip through the middle.

A crowded midfield provides the engine for Ternana. Pierobon and Buglio function as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Rocchetti and Mussolini operate as two inverted eights who move into the half spaces to create passing lanes. Maistro plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box. This five man midfield unit is designed to pick up runners and disrupt the opposition through the middle.

The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards. Adorante works as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes. Candellone plays alongside him to find pockets of space and make runs in behind. They combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position. The team uses the wide areas to stretch the defense before playing through the lines to the strikers.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows Ternana to control the ball in the middle third. Another strength is the ability to transition quickly from a mid block to an attacking phase once Maistro receives the ball. The central compactness makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center of the pitch.

This 3-5-2 formation is built to dominate matches where the opponent lacks a strong midfield presence. It is best suited for games where Ternana can control the central zones and strike on the transition.
