Costa Rica looks to play a very direct and defensive style of football with a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before using the speed of the forwards to hit teams on the break. By packing the central areas, the team aims to frustrate opponents and stay compact.

P.Sequeira acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a central trio made up of J.Vargas, captain F.Calvo, and J.Mitchell. F.Calvo provides leadership in the center while J.Mitchell covers the right side of the three. This central group is supported by attacking wing backs G.Taylor on the right and A.Lassiter on the left. G.Taylor and A.Lassiter are tasked to push high up the pitch to provide width, while the three central defenders work to win headers and clear the lines when the opposition sends crosses into the box.

In the middle of the pitch, Costa Rica utilizes a three-man midfield to control the central zone. O.Galo sits in the single pivot role to shield the defense and pick up runners coming from deep. Beside him, B.Aguilera and A.Bran operate as the two central midfielders. B.Aguilera and A.Bran are responsible for connecting the defense to the attack, often recycling possession to find space. They must also press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines easily.

The attacking unit relies on a partnership of two forwards. M.Ugalde and J.Campbell play as the front two, looking to exploit space behind the opposition defense. M.Ugalde often works to hold up the ball, allowing the team to move up the pitch. J.Campbell looks to make runs in behind to catch defenders out of position. When the team wins the ball back high up the pitch, these two must quickly transition to attack, either through long balls or quick combinations to catch the opponent off guard.

One major strength of this Costa Rica lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when G.Taylor and A.Lassiter move forward. This forces the opposition to track them, which can leave gaps in the middle. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders make it very difficult for teams to find passing lanes through the center. This makes the team hard to break down in a low block.

This 5-3-2 formation is designed to be defensively solid and dangerous on the counter. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold a lot of possession and leave space behind their defenders.
