Lecce aims to play a high intensity game focused on winning the ball back high up the pitch. They utilize a 4-3-3 formation to maintain pressure across the pitch. This lineup is built to play vertical football, looking to break the lines as soon as possession is regained. By using a wide front three, the team seeks to stretch the defense and create space for the midfielders to move into.
In goal, 1 stays alert to organize the defensive unit. The defense operates as a flat back four with 5 at right back and 3 at left back. Both 5 and 3 are tasked to push up and overlap the winger to provide width. The central defenders, 2 and 4, must hold the line and defend zonally. 2 acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while 4 stays deep to provide cover and sweep behind a high line. The unit works to hold a compact block to deny the turn of any oncoming attackers.
The midfield is a three-man midfield with a single pivot. 6 sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and pick up runners. 8 and 10 operate as the two eights in the half-spaces. 6 often drops between 2 and 4 to receive the ball and recycle possession. 8 is a carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. 10 looks to make late runs into the box to support the striker. This trio works to compress the midfield and win the second ball.
Lecce attacks with three players across the front line. 9 plays as a lone striker and acts as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front. 11 and 7 act as wide wingers to provide width. 11 often cuts inside to combine in tight spaces, while 7 stays wide to pull wide and stretch the opposition. They look to hit in behind on the transition and use the wingers to deliver early crosses. This movement creates opportunities for 9 to attack the near post or the far post.
One major advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which puts immense pressure on the opposition goalkeeper. The team also creates wide overloads when 5 and 3 move up to support the wingers. This forces the opponent to defend more space and often leads to one on one situations for 7 and 11. Additionally, the speed of transition allows Lecce to counter at pace before the opposition can recover.
This 4-3-3 formation is centered on high pressing and quick verticality. It is most effective against opponents who struggle to play short from the back or fail to manage high intensity.
