PSG Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Carlos V · Moncho · Gambeta · AXL · Vicho · Cristobal / DAVID · Churrasco · Diego Ramirez (Amigo Vicho) · Renzo · ERIZO · Galleta (Estani)PSG plays with a high press identity using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to suffocate the middle of the park and force play toward the flanks.
Carlos V occupies the goal to lead the defensive unit. The back line works as a flat back four to maintain a narrow defensive block. Vicho and Cristobal / DAVID occupy the central defender roles, with Vicho focusing on winning headers and Cristobal / DAVID acting as the covering defender to sweep behind a high line. AXL and Galleta act as the full backs, tasked to mark wide players and shift across to support the center. The entire unit works to stay compact and deny any space between the defenders.
A five man midfield forms the engine of Paris Saint-Germain. Churrasco and Diego Ramirez act as a double pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. They sit deep to protect the central zone. Moncho, ERIZO, and Gambeta operate as the remaining three midfielders to link the defensive and attacking lines. Moncho works to recycle possession, while ERIZO and Gambeta look to carry the ball forward and press aggressively to win the ball high. This formation allows the team to control the tempo and win the second ball.
Renzo leads the line as a lone striker and a pressing centre-forward. He works to pin the last defender and disrupt the build up from the back. When PSG transitions, Renzo tries to hold up the ball to allow Moncho, ERIZO, and Gambeta to arrive late into the box. The team looks to attack through combinations in the half spaces or through quick vertical passes. The goal is to create runs in behind or use the midfielders to create overloads in the final third.
The main strength of this formation is the density in the middle of the pitch. By using five midfielders, the team achieves numerical superiority in the central zone to win the ball back quickly. The ability to press in coordinated waves also makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a solid platform for controlling the center of the pitch. It is ideally suited for games where the team needs to face a high possession opponent by sitting in a mid-block.
