Starting Lineup

Arsenal play with a focus on controlled possession and a high press using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup allows the team to control the tempo while staying ready to win the ball back high up the pitch. Raya acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up from the back. The defensive unit operates with a back three where Saliba serves as a ball playing defender while Gabriel is dominant in the air. Partey plays as the middle centre back to help play out from the back and cover the space behind the midfield. Calafiori and White act as attacking wing backs to provide width. Calafiori pushes high to join the attack while White covers the flank and can overlap the winger.

The midfield functions as a two man unit consisting of Rice and Havertz. Rice sits in front of the back three to shield the defence and use his passing range to move the ball. Havertz acts as a carrier who can move between the lines and make late runs into the box. This pair must work hard to press in a mid block and ensure they do not leave the centre too open when the wing backs push forward.

Arsenal use three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Trossard leads the line as a pressing centre forward who can also drop deep to link up play. Martinelli and Saka act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central presence. Saka looks to isolate a one on one wide while Martinelli uses his pace to make runs in behind. This front three works to press the opposition back line and create chances through quick combinations.

One major advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves by using the front three and the midfield. The team can also create wide overloads when White and Calafiori push forward to support the wingers. This formation provides great compactness when defending because the wing backs can drop into a narrow defensive block to protect the middle.
