Creation DateOctober 3, 2024

Starting Lineup

Alan Hall · Mason Beattie · Blake Keatings · Louie McClean · Kuba Osman · Issac Woods · Lewis Stitt · Jayden Young · Olly Lynn · Alex Fuller · Billy Benson

Northern Ireland relies on a direct and compact style of play using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to stay hard to beat and strike quickly when the opposition loses possession. The team looks to maintain a compact presence that forces opponents wide and limits space in the center of the pitch.

Mason Beattie guards the goal while the back four maintains a zonal line. Blake Keatings stays at left back to defend the flank, while Louie McClean operates on the right to cover the wide areas. In the middle, Kuba Osman and Issac Woods form the central pairing to defend zonally and win the second ball. The defensive unit works to hold a narrow defensive block and ensures they do not get caught out when the line steps up.

The midfield works in two banks of four to cover the pitch. Alex Fuller and Olly Lynn act as the central pair to shield the defense and win the ball in the middle. They look to recycle possession and connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the edges, Lewis Stitt and Jayden Young provide the necessary width. Lewis Stitt and Jayden Young are tasked to track back to help the full backs and push forward to deliver crosses when the team breaks quickly.

Up front, Northern Ireland uses a partnership of two forwards to pressure the opposition back line. Alan Hall and Billy Benson work in tandem to hold up the ball and make runs in behind. The attack is built through quick transitions where the midfielders look to hit in behind on the transition. Billy Benson can find the feet of the striker or play a quick pass to move the defense, while Alan Hall looks to pull wide or run into the channels.

One major advantage of this 4-4-2 is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. The narrow distance between the two banks of four makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition. Once Alex Fuller or Olly Lynn win the ball, they can quickly spread the play to the wingers to catch the opposition out of position.

This 4-4-2 formation is designed for a team that wants to stay solid and exploit space on the break. It is best suited for facing teams that hold a lot of possession and leave space behind their defense.
