Starting Lineup

Milan aims to control the center of the pitch and strike with speed using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep in a mid block and then move forward quickly when the ball is won. The team relies on a narrow bank of players to squeeze the space and force the opposition to play wide.

WEAH guards the goal as the goalkeeper. The back four uses a flat line with ZIEGE at right back and COCO at left back, while BOBAN and LEONARDO occupy the central defender roles. ZIEGE and COCO are expected to overlap the wide areas when the team plays out from the back. BOBAN and LEONARDO must defend zonally and win headers to clear the lines. The defensive unit works to stay compact to deny the turn of the opposition attackers.

The midfield is a five man group that focuses on congesting the middle. ALBERTINI acts as a deep lying playmaker who can recycle possession and switch play with his wide passing range. MALDINI plays on the right side of the central midfield, using his positional sense to intercept passes and cover the space behind the full back. AYALA sits on the left side of this trio to shield the defence. Further forward, COSTACURTA and ANDRÉ CRUZ operate in the half spaces to connect the lines. They look to carry the ball forward and find the striker.

In the attacking phase, LEHMAN works as a lone striker and a pressing centre forward. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up. The attack is built through the movement of ANDRÉ CRUZ and COSTACURTA, who look to play through the lines or provide service from the half spaces. When Milan transitions, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition, often with the wide midfielders pulling wide to stretch the defence.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team creates numerical superiority in the midfield, making it difficult for the opposition to pass through the center. The ability to press in pairs helps the team win the ball back high up the pitch. Milan also stays very compact when defending, which makes it hard for opponents to find gaps.
