Croatia National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Pletikosa · Ćorluka · Štimac · Lovren · Gvardiol · Bilić · Modrić · Kranjčar · Eduardo · Šuker · PerišićThe Vatreni focus on a high press and rapid attacking movements to unsettle opponents using a 3-4-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly. Croatia relies on a vertical style that moves the ball from the defensive third to the attackers with minimal touches to catch the opposition out of position.
Pletikosa operates in goal to organize the defensive unit and command his area. The back line is a back three consisting of Štimac, Ćorluka, and Lovren. Lovren acts as a covering defender to sweep behind a high line, while Štimac and Ćorluka act as wide centre-backs to defend zonally and block the runner. The defenders work to squeeze the space and prevent opponents from playing through the lines or finding space between them.
The midfield functions with a double pivot to hold the center. Bilić and Gvardiol work to shield the defense and win the second ball. Gvardiol helps to carry the ball forward to link the lines and progress through the thirds. Modrić and Kranjčar play further up in the half-spaces to connect the midfield to the front three. Modrić uses his passing range to find the feet of the striker, while Kranjčar works to break the line with forward passes.
In the attacking phase, Šuker acts as a target man to hold up the ball in the center. Perišić and Eduardo provide width and presence on the flanks. Perišić tends to cut inside to create goalscoring chances, while Eduardo works to stretch the defence. The team attacks in combinations to create runs in behind and cutbacks. The front three are tasked to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
This lineup provides a significant advantage through numerical superiority in the central areas when the midfielders push up. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when Bilić or Gvardiol win the ball and immediately look to break quickly. The presence of three defenders allows Croatia to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block against strong attacks.
This 3-4-3 formation is defined by its ability to press high and attack with intensity. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle rapid transitions.
