Starting Lineup

Burian · Maroš · Podkonický · Makky · Vodera · Boledovič ("C") · Charvát · Havlík · Šulák · Záhorák · Cserepkai

Šamorín aims to play a vertical style of football through a 5-2-3 formation. The team looks to win the ball back and hit the opposition quickly in transition. This lineup relies on a solid defensive foundation before looking to break the line with the forward three.

Burian acts as the last line of defence in goal. The defensive unit operates with a back five that can shift into a narrow defensive block. Boledovič sits in the center as the main stopper to win the header and clear the lines. Podkonický and Makky play as wide centre-backs to cover the spaces left by the wing backs. Maroš and Vodera operate as attacking wing backs who push up the flanks to provide width. This lineup allows the back line to hold the line or drop deep to protect the central zone.

The midfield consists of a pair of central midfielders. Charvát and Havlík work in a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Charvát acts to shield the defence while Havlík looks to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must work to win the second ball and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. This duo is responsible for recycling possession and finding the feet of the strikers.

Up front, Šamorín uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Šulák plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Záhorák and Cserepkai operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull defenders apart. When attacking, Maroš and Vodera overlap the winger to create numerical superiority in wide areas. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

The formation offers great compactness when defending. With five defenders and two midfielders, the team can easily sit deep and deny the turn to opposition players. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads. When Maroš and Záhorák push forward together, they can isolate a defender in a one on one situation. The team also benefits from a high press in coordinated waves when the forward three trigger the press.

The 5-2-3 lineup provides Šamorín with a reliable way to defend against teams that want to control possession. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to play on the counter at pace.
