Starting Lineup

Lautaro · Garnacho · Dybala · J. Álvarez · Mac Allister · E. Fernández · Molina · Medina · Romero · Barco · Martínez

Argentina looks to dominate the ball and squeeze the pitch with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on intense pressing and creating overloads in the middle of the park to control the tempo. The team wants to win it back high up the pitch to keep the opposition pinned in their own half.

Martínez guards the goal while a narrow defensive block consists of only two center backs. Medina and Romero act as the central pillars, with Romero being dominant in the air to clear the lines. They play with a high line to keep the team compact, meaning they must step up to catch runners and rely on their recovery speed. Because there are no full backs, the defenders must be ready to cover the wide areas if the ball is switched play.

The midfield is a heavy five man unit designed to overwhelm the center of the pitch. Barco and Molina act as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Molina often moving to cover gaps. E. Fernández and Mac Allister occupy the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. Dybala operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the attackers.

Up front, Argentina uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Lautaro acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball. Garnacho and J. Álvarez play as wide wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. This movement creates space for Dybala to arrive late into the box or for the midfielders to make runs in behind. The forwards work to pin the last defender and create one on one situations out wide.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. Argentina can also use the wide players to pull the opposition defense apart, creating gaps for late runners. The ability to press in waves from the front three and the midfield five makes this a very aggressive lineup in transition.

The 2-5-3 setup allows Argentina to control games through high ball possession and central density. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to dominate a lower block or overwhelm a midfield.
