Lecce relies on a resilient defensive identity through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking style of football. The goal is to remain defensively solid and use a mid block to force the opposition into wide areas.
1 stays between the posts to lead the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four with 3 acting as the right centre back and 4 as the left centre back. To protect the flanks, 2 plays as the right back and 6 operates as the left back. These defenders defend zonally and work to hold the line against direct runners. The full backs must track back to ensure the team does not get stretched when the opposition attacks the wings.
The midfield is a crowded five man block designed to win the second ball. 5 and 11 form a double pivot to shield the defence. 5 sits as the left defensive midfielder while 11 provides cover as the right defensive midfielder. Ahead of them, 7 and 8 act as the central midfielders to press in a mid block and recover possession. 10 sits in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines and recycle possession. This formation creates a wall that is hard to pass through.
The attack is built around 9 who acts as a lone striker. 9 needs to hold up the ball and work to pin the last defender to create space for others. Without natural wingers, the width is provided when 2 and 6 overlap the winger or move into wide areas. 7 and 8 make late runs into the box to support the attack. The team aims to win the ball high and use 10 to play through the lines with a quick transition.
One tactical advantage is the compactness when defending. By squeezing the space in the middle, 5, 11, 7, 8, and 10 make it difficult for the opponent to find passing lanes. Another strength is the speed of transition once the ball is won. The team can quickly move from a low block to a direct attack to catch the opposition out.
This 4-5-1 lineup is built to be incredibly hard to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where Lecce can defend deep and hit in behind on the transition.
