In the defensive phase, 1 stands between the posts to organize the line. The back four consists of 2 and 3 on the flanks, with 6 and 5 occupying the central positions. 6 and 5 must work together to win the header and cover any runs made by the opponent. 2 and 3 are tasked to track back and defend the wide areas when the team is out of possession. The whole defensive unit works to stay compact and deny the turn to oncoming attackers.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to manage the center of the pitch. 4 and 8 work as the two central midfielders. 4 is the player who shields the defence and sits deep to intercept passes. 8 is expected to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the heavy attacking line. They must work hard to win the second ball and stop the opposition from playing through the lines or finding space in the middle.

The attacking lineup is very heavy with four players positioned high up the pitch. 7 and 11 play as wide attackers who look to spread wide and stretch the defence. In the central area, 10 and 9 operate as two forwards. 10 works to link up play between the lines, while 9 focuses on the physical battle to hold up the ball. This formation looks to create runs in behind and use the width provided by 7 and 11 to whip it in toward the box.

Lecce gains a major advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With four players in the front line, the team can press from the front to force a long ball and regain possession quickly. Another strength is the speed of transition when the team recovers possession. When 4 or 8 win the ball, they can immediately find 7, 11, 10, or 9 to hit in behind on the transition and exploit a high line.
