Torino relies on defensive solidity and verticality in a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a compact game, often sitting in a mid block to deny space between the lines. The goal is to remain hard to beat while waiting to break quickly when the opponent loses control or makes a mistake in the middle third.
The defensive unit starts with 1 in goal to organize the back line. The formation uses a back three consisting of 2, 5, and 3. Player 5 sits centrally to win the header and anchor the defence. To the sides, 2 and 3 act as the RCB and LCB to cover the channels and track back if the opposition spreads wide. This trio works together to maintain a narrow defensive block and prevent through balls.
In the middle, the team utilizes a five man midfield. A central trio of 4, 6, and 8 controls the tempo of the match. Player 4 acts to shield the defence and protect the center. 6 and 8 are tasked to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attack. Further up, 11 and 7 act as the RAM and LAM to operate in the half spaces. These two players press aggressively to win the ball high and support the two forwards when attacking.
The attack features a two man partnership with 10 and 9 leading the line. As the RS and LS, they work to find space in behind or hold up the ball to bring others into play. The attacking movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow 11 and 7 to cut inside. By playing through the lines, the team aims to isolate defenders in one on one situations. They can also use quick combinations to move the ball toward the goal and find the feet of the striker.
One major advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in the central midfield. Having 4, 6, and 8 together makes it difficult for the opposition to bypass the midfield. The team also benefits from a strong ability to press in a mid block, which keeps the opponent from playing out from the back easily. This creates high turnover opportunities for 11 and 7 to exploit as they transition into the final third.
This 3-5-2 formation is a resilient system that prioritizes control of the central zones. It is best suited for games against possession based teams where Torino can exploit the space left on the transition.
