Starting Lineup

MAIGNAN · THEO · TOMORI · GABBIA · CALABRIA · BENNACER · MUSAH · LEAO · LOFTUS-CHEEK · PULISIC · GIROUD

Milan plays with a 4-2-4 formation to drive a vertical style of football. This lineup is built to press high and win the ball back quickly to exploit gaps in the opposition defense. By pushing more players into the attacking third, the team seeks to overwhelm opponents through directness and speed.

MAIGNAN acts as the goalkeeper, using his command of the area to secure the defense. The back line functions as a flat back four with GABBIA and TOMORI acting as the central defenders. TOMORI uses his pace to cover space and intercept runners while GABBIA is dominant in the air to win headers. On the flanks, CALABRIA acts as a defensive right back to protect the middle, while THEO is an attacking left back who will push high to provide width.

The midfield is a double pivot consisting of BENNACER and MUSAH. BENNACER moves to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball and play through the lines. MUSAH is the carrier who drives forward with the ball to support the front four. These two must work together to compress the midfield and win the second ball when the team is out of possession.

In the attacking phase, Milan uses four players across the front line. GIROUD acts as a target man to hold up the ball, while LOFTUS-CHEEK plays as a second striker making late runs into the box. On the wings, LEAO and PULISIC provide immense width and threat. LEAO uses his dribbling to cut inside and beat his man, while PULISIC looks to stretch the defense and hit in behind on the transition.

One tactical advantage is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations. With the central duo of GIROUD and LOFTUS-CHEEK pinning the last defenders, LEAO and PULISIC can find space to attack the flanks. The team also creates wide overloads when THEO overlaps the winger. This makes the Milan attack very difficult to defend against during quick transitions.

This 4-2-4 formation is designed for high intensity and direct attacking play. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle with pace in wide areas.
