Starting Lineup

Prioritizing a mid-block and defensive stability, Atlético uses a 3-6-1 formation to control space. This lineup is built to play a direct style that relies on defensive solidity and quick transitions once the ball is won. The team looks to squeeze the space between the lines and force the opposition into mistakes before striking.

The goalkeeper sits behind a narrow defensive block consisting of three central defenders. These three center backs maintain a compact line to defend zonally and prevent through balls. The central defender acts as the anchor, while the wide center backs are ready to cover the space when the wingers push high. This unit works to stay close together, ensuring they win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure.

In the middle of the pitch, Atlético utilizes a crowded midfield to dominate the center. A single pivot sits deep to shield the defense, allowing the two central midfielders to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. The two wide midfielders in the RMF and LMF roles are tasked to track back and defend against wide threats, while also providing width during the attack. This midfield group is designed to press in a mid-block and intercept passes to trigger quick breaks.

The attacking presence is led by a lone striker who works to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Supporting him is a second striker playing in the hole, acting as a link between the midfield and the front line. This second striker looks to receive on the half-turn and find the feet of the striker or play a one-two to break the line. The team attacks in combinations, often using the wide midfielders to provide support through the half-spaces.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the center of the pitch, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The density in the midfield allows Atlético to win the ball back high up the pitch in certain zones. Furthermore, the setup provides great compactness when defending, making it hard to find gaps between the defensive and midfield units.
