Starting Lineup

Havertz · Saka · Martinelli · Jesus · Partey · Rice · White · Saliba · Gabriel · Timber · Raya

Arsenal aims to play a high press and heavy vertical football in this 4-2-4 formation. The lineup focuses on aggressive attacking bursts and winning the ball back high up the pitch. This system relies on rapid transitions to punish teams that leave space behind their defensive line.

Raya acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up. A flat back four forms the defensive unit with White as the right back and Timber at left back. Saliba and Gabriel operate as the central defenders to hold the line. Saliba provides great recovery speed and aerial strength while Gabriel is dominant in the air to clear the lines. The full backs often push high to support the wide attackers, which requires the central defenders to cover the wide spaces.

A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to link the defense to the attack. Rice and Partey work to shield the defense and win the second ball. Rice uses his high pressing intensity to disrupt the opposition in a mid-block. Partey is able to carry the ball forward to progress through the thirds. This duo must be disciplined to prevent being bypassed by central passing through the lines.

The attacking line uses two forwards in a partnership alongside two wide attackers. Jesus and Havertz operate as the central strikers to pin the last defender. Martinelli plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Saka acts as a wide winger on the right to spread wide and deliver crosses. These attackers press the opposition back line to force a long ball. The movement of the strikers creates space for the wide players to attack the near post or far post.

Arsenal gains a significant advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having four players stationed high, they can trigger a press immediately upon losing possession. The team also finds success in isolating Saka in one on one situations against the opposition full back. This creates constant threats on the flanks and stretches the defense.

This 4-2-4 formation is built for high tempo attacking and relentless pressure. It is best suited for games where Arsenal needs to overwhelm an opponent through sheer offensive volume.
