Starting Lineup

Albania operates with a heavy focus on defensive solidity and playing on the counter, utilizing a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure, looking to strike quickly when the opposition leaves space behind their back line. The team aims to deny space between the lines and force the opponent into wide areas where they can be squeezed.

The defensive unit begins with the goalkeeper, who serves as the last line of defense. In front of him, a flat back four consists of the RB, LB, and two central defenders, the RCB and LCB. The RCB and LCB work to defend zonally, focusing on winning headers and clearing the lines during sustained pressure. The RB and LB are tasked to track back and defend the flanks, often dropping deep to form a narrow defensive block when the ball is on the opposite side. The unit works to hold a compact shape and limit the number of runners getting into the box.

The midfield operates in a five man block designed to control the center of the pitch. A double pivot of the LDM and RDM works to shield the defense, with the LDM often dropping deeper to protect the center backs while the RDM looks to intercept passes. Moving up, the LCM and RCM operate in the half spaces to provide balance, while the CAM plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the lines. The LCM and RCM must be ready to transition from a mid block to an attacking phase, ensuring they can recycle possession once the ball is won.

In the attacking phase, Albania relies on a lone striker to lead the line. The ST must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move forward, often working to pin the last defender to create space for others. The CAM operates in the hole to provide link up play between the midfield and the striker. On the flanks, the LW and RW are required to stretch the defence by staying wide, creating opportunities for cutbacks or runs in behind. The attack is designed to move from a low block into rapid transitions, looking to exploit gaps through direct passing.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its compactness when defending. By crowding the midfield, Albania can deny the pivot of the opposition and force long balls. The setup also allows for quick transitions, using the width provided by the LW and RW to catch the opponent off guard during a break.
