Starting Lineup

Brighton aim to control the tempo through a high press and controlled buildup using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to play a game of territorial dominance, using a compact block to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to progress through the thirds. The lineup focuses on squeezing the space in the middle of the pitch to force the opposition into wide areas where they can be trapped.

In goal, CF keeps things organized from the back. The defensive unit works as a flat back four where RW and LW act as wide defenders. RW provides coverage on the left, while LW handles the right side. CM and CM occupy the central roles, playing as ball playing centre backs to help play out from the back. They must hold the line and stay compact to prevent runners from getting behind, while also being ready to step up and engage the striker.

The midfield is a five man unit designed to clog the central lanes. RB and LB play on the flanks as wide midfielders to provide width and track back when needed. In the center, CB and CB work to shield the defense and win the second ball. GK operates in the advanced role to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping into space to receive the ball and recycle possession. This group works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition playmakers.

Leading the line, CB operates as a lone striker. The role requires them to hold up the ball and act as a focal point for the team. CB must fight for individual duels and try to find the feet of the striker to bring the midfielders into the game. When the team wins the ball, the goal is to find CB quickly to allow the wide players or the central midfielders to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box.

Brighton gain a tactical advantage through their ability to press in a mid-block and trigger a press in coordinated waves. The numerical superiority in the central midfield area makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the way the wide midfielders and full backs interact allows the team to create wide overloads, pulling the opposition defense apart and creating space in the channels.
