Starting Lineup

FC Porto focuses on a compact defensive presence and quick transitions, operating from a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents on the break. The goal is to squeeze the space between lines and remain difficult to break down.

Samu stays between the posts to guard the goal. The back line works as a narrow defensive block consisting of a back three. Nico plays as the right centre-back, while Jaime sits in the middle and Varela acts as the left centre-back. Galeno operates as a right wing back to provide width, and Pepê functions as a left wing back. These wide defenders must track back to help the central three when the team defends deep. In the attacking phase, the team relies on a lone striker, Diogo, to lead the line. Diogo acts as a target man to hold up the ball and wait for support. Moura and Martim push higher to support the attack, often looking to exploit space left behind the opposition. The formation seeks to create runs in behind or use the wing backs to provide crosses into the box. Much of the attacking play comes in transition when the team can move from a low block to a vertical attack.
