Starting Lineup

Milan relies on a compact midfield and quick transitions to control matches using a 4-5-1. Maignan acts as the last line of defense, using his shot stopping and sweeping ability to cover the space behind the back four. The defense operates with a flat back four where Calabria stays deep to defend the right flank and Theo acts as an attacking wing back. In the center, Gabbia and Tomori hold the line, with Tomori using his pace to cover if the team plays a high line. This unit aims to squeeze the space between the defensive and midfield lines to deny the turn of opposition attackers.

A midfield of five sits in front of the defense to protect the central areas. Bennacer and Pobega operate as a double pivot, with Bennacer looking to recycle possession and Pobega sitting deep to shield the back four. Adli occupies the central role to connect the defense to the attack, while Saelmaekers and Leao play on the sides of the midfield block. Leao uses his dribbling style to drive from the left half space, while Saelmaekers works to track back and support the defense.

The attack relies on Camarda playing as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link with the advancing midfielders. Leao acts as an inverted winger who cuts inside from the left, creating space for Theo to overlap on the flank. Saelmaekers can also push higher to support the striker, while Adli looks to arrive late into the box to finish moves. Quick passes through the lines aim to find Camarda or use the width provided by the full backs to whip it in.

One major strength for Milan is the ability to create wide overloads when Theo and Leao combine on the left side. The midfield also offers great compactness when defending in a mid block, making it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. Additionally, the team can break quickly on the transition, using the speed of players like Leao to catch the opposition out of position.
