Metalist Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Horyainov · Obradović · Panchyshyn · Villagra · Suslo · Valyayev · Edmar · Xavier · Linke · Dević · TarasovMetalist relies on a high press and quick transitions to unsettle opponents, utilizing a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a vertical game, looking to win the ball high up the pitch and move forward with speed. The team aims to squeeze the space in the opponent half to force mistakes, making them a dangerous side when they can play through the lines.
Horyainov stays between the posts to organize the back line. Metalist defends with a flat back four that can step up to set the offside trap or drop into a low block when under pressure. Obradović and Panchyshyn act as the central defenders, where Panchyshyn covers the space while Obradović looks to win the header in aerial duels. Villagra and Suslo play as full backs, with Villagra looking to overlap the winger and Suslo tasked to track back and defend against wide runners.
The midfield operates with a single pivot system to control the center of the pitch. Valyayev sits in front of the defence to shield the back four and intercept passes. Beside him, Edmar acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Xavier plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the attackers or arrive late into the box to add a goal threat. This three man midfield works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to the opposition.
In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Tarasov acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the last defender to create space for others. Dević and Linke operate as wide wingers, with Dević looking to cut inside from the left and Linke to spread wide on the right. This movement creates chances for cutbacks from the byline or allows the forwards to combine in tight spaces. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One major advantage for Metalist is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which can disrupt the build play of many teams. The presence of Xavier allows the team to create numerical superiority in the half spaces, making it hard for a double pivot to track every runner. Additionally, the speed of transition when Linke and Dević receive the ball allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can reset.
This 4-3-3 formation provides a balanced way to control the game through pressing and verticality. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play short from the back or those that leave space behind their midfield.
