Starting Lineup

Burian · Baka · Podkonický · Makky · Vodera · Boledovič ("C") · Janitor · Havlík · Šulák · Boháč · Cserepkai

To provide defensive solidity and quick transitions, Šamorín utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. The team looks to sit deep and wait for the right moment to strike on the break. This formation is built to play a vertical game where the distance between the defensive and attacking units is quickly closed during an attack.

Burian keeps goal and organizes the defensive block. The back line consists of a central trio of Boledovič, Makky, and Podkonický. Boledovič sits in the middle to cover space while Makky and Podkonický act as the side centre-backs to win the second ball and defend zonally. Baka and Vodera play as attacking wing backs to provide width. Baka pushes up to overlap the winger while Vodera covers the left flank to ensure the team stays compact when the opposition has the ball.

The midfield is a two-man unit featuring Janitor and Havlík. Janitor works to shield the defence and intercept passes in the central area. Havlík acts as the carrier to drive the ball forward and connect the back line to the front three. These two must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines. They are also responsible for recycling possession when the team plays out from the back.

In the final third, Šamorín uses three attackers. Boháč and Cserepkai act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defence. Šulák leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. When the team attacks, Boháč and Cserepkai often cut inside to create space for Baka and Vodera to deliver crosses. The movements of Šulák are designed to pull defenders out of position and create runs in behind.

One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads from the wing backs. Because Baka and Vodera push so high, they create two on one situations against the opposition full backs. Another advantage is the compactness when defending in a low block. The narrow positioning of Boledovič, Makky, and Podkonický makes it very hard for the opponent to find gaps centrally. The team is also dangerous in transition, using the pace of the wide players to hit in behind on the transition.

This 5-2-3 formation offers a very sturdy defensive base for Šamorín. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where the goal is to absorb pressure and counter at pace.
