Starting Lineup

Emi Martínez · Rüdiger · Cuti Romero · Hernández · Carvajal · Valverde · Barella · Rodri · Kvaratskhelia · Mohamed Salah · Julián Alvarez

Valencia aims to play a high press and rapid vertical football using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly on the transition. The team seeks to dominate through intense pressure and directness in every attacking phase.

Emi Martínez operates as the goalkeeper to launch attacks. The defensive unit is a back five featuring Rodri as the central defender who holds the line. Cuti Romero and Rüdiger act as the wide centre-backs, where they can step up to intercept or cover the space if the line is breached. Carvajal and Hernández function as attacking wing backs to provide width while tracking back to defend the flanks. The unit defends zonally to maintain a compact block.

A two-man midfield acts as the link between the defence and the front line. Barella and Valverde form a double pivot that must cover large areas of the pitch. Barella presses aggressively to win the ball high, while Valverde uses his driving runs to carry the ball forward through the middle. They are tasked to recycle possession and find the attackers quickly to break the lines.

The attacking unit uses three forwards to stretch the defence. Julián Alvarez acts as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line. Kvaratskhelia and Mohamed Salah play as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. Kvaratskhelia relies on his dribbling to move the ball, whereas Salah looks to find space to shoot. Carvajal and Hernández overlap the wingers to deliver crosses and maintain width.

This formation provides excellent speed of transition. The presence of three attackers allows Valencia to pin the last defender and create immediate pressure. The team also achieves wide overloads when the wing backs push high to support the wingers. This creates many one on one situations for the wide players and forces the opposition to defend in deep territory.

The 5-2-3 relies on high intensity and directness in front of goal. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or leave gaps behind their defenders.
