Starting Lineup

T. SCHUMACHER · SCHNELLINGER · CULLMAN · WEBER · KONOPKA · H. SCHAFER · OVERATH · FLOHE · LITTBARSKI · D. MULLER · LOHR

Köln aims to play a direct and vertical style of football, utilizing a 4-4-2 formation to control space. This lineup works to hit teams quickly once the ball is won, relying on strength and directness to move up the pitch. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition before playing through the lines.

T. Schumacher sits between the posts to command the area. The back four operates as a flat defensive line where Konopka and Schnellinger act as full backs to provide width. Weber and Cullman form the central pair, with Weber providing aerial strength and Cullman acting as a covering defender to sweep behind a high line. This defensive unit stays compact to deny space between the lines and ensures they stay close together to protect the middle.

The midfield functions as a four man block to control the center of the pitch. Overath operates as a carrier who can drive forward with the ball, while Flohe acts as a link to connect the defence and the attack. Littbaski works on the right to provide service, and H. Schafer covers the left side. This midfield group is tasked to press in a mid-block to win the second ball and immediately look for the forwards.

Köln uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. D. Muller acts as a pressing centre-forward to force the opposition back line into errors, while Lohr works alongside him to hold up the ball and lay it off. The team looks to use the wingers to spread wide and deliver crosses into the box. When the team wins the ball, the attackers make runs in behind to catch the opposition out of position.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield through hard running. The team can also use wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. Another strength is the speed of transition, allowing the players to move from a defensive block to an attacking phase in seconds.

This 4-4-2 formation is built to be a hard working and direct unit. It is best suited for games where the team needs to counter at pace against an opponent that plays a high line.
