Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Svilar (99) · Zeki Çelik (19) · Mancini (23) · Ndicka (5) · Angeliño (3) · Paredes (16) · Cristante (4) · Zalewski (59) · Pellegrini (7) · Dybala (21) · Dovbyk (11)Roma aims to play a heavy pressing game using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and using quick transitions to catch the opposition out of position. The tactical intent of the Giallorossi is to control the central areas while using wide players to stretch the defence.
Svilar acts as the goalkeeper to start any build up play. In front of him, the back three consists of Ndicka, Mancini, and Angeliño. Mancini serves as the right centre-back and is dominant in the air, while Ndicka provides cover in the middle of the defensive line. Angeliño operates as the left centre-back to help play out from the back. This defensive unit works to maintain a high line and squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield works in a four man block to control the tempo and protect the back three. Cristante and Paredes form a double pivot to shield the defence, with Paredes looking to recycle possession and Cristante acting as a carrier to drive forward. Zeki Çelik and Zalewski operate as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width. Zeki Çelik tracks back to help the defence while Zalewski pushes up to support the attack. This midfield group links the defensive unit to the front line by playing through the lines.
Roma utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Dovbyk acts as the lone striker and a physical target man to hold up the ball. Pellegrini plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create chances, while Dybala operates on the right and looks to find the feet of the striker or create in tight spaces. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and create opportunities for the midfield to win the second ball.
A major advantage for Roma is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The formation creates wide overloads when Zeki Çelik and Zalewski push forward to support the wingers. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the middle when the wide midfielders tuck in to help Cristante and Paredes. This allows the team to maintain compactness when defending.
This 3-4-3 formation is designed for a high intensity pressing game. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
