Athletic focuses on a direct and reactive style of play. The team operates in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to defend deep and strike quickly when they win the ball back. The priority is to remain compact and spread wide to exploit spaces.

Iraizoz guards the goal for Athletic Club. A back three of Iturraspe, Amorebieta, and Javi forms the core of the defensive line. Iturraspe acts as the central man to win the second ball and organize the unit. Amorebieta and Javi provide cover on either side, often stepping up to intercept passes. Aurtenetxe and Iraola act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and support the attack. They must track back quickly to prevent being outnumbered on the flanks.

In the middle of the pitch, de Marcos and Ander form a double pivot. These two players work to shield the defense and win possession. Ander helps to control the tempo and recycle possession, while de Marcos uses his work rate to drive forward with the ball. They connect the defensive line to the front three, making sure they do not get caught too far from their own goal. They must monitor the space between the lines to prevent the opposition from playing through them.

The attacking front line consists of Muniain, Susaeta, and Llorente. Llorente acts as a target man, using his aerial strength to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Muniain and Susaeta play as wide attackers who look to cut inside or deliver crosses. Muniain is known for his dribbling style and ability to operate in tight spaces. The wingers look to hit in behind on the transition. This creates chances for Llorente to win the header or for the wingers to get to the byline and cut it back.

This 5-2-3 formation offers strong defensive stability due to the extra man in the back line. It allows Athletic to stay compact and deny the turn to opposition strikers. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when Aurtenetxe and Iraola join the wingers. This forces the opposition to defend a lot of ground and can lead to quick transitions when they win the ball high up the pitch.

The formation is built for defensive resilience and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defense.
