Man Utd looks to play with a high press and rapid transitions in this 3-4-3 formation. The team focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. This lineup is built to stretch the defence and attack quickly once possession is regained.
J. Trafford plays between the posts to start the build up. The back line consists of a back three with M. De Ligt acting as the central figure to clear the lines. J. Braitwaite sits on the left of the trio while Diogo Dalot occupies the right side. De Ligt is dominant in the air and provides cover for his teammates. The defenders work together to maintain a high line and squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield operates as a flat four to control the middle of the pitch. Casemiro acts as the sitter to shield the defence and intercept passes. A. Wharton provides energy to drive forward with the ball and connect the back line to the attack. On the flanks, A. Diallo and N. Mazraoui play as wide midfielders. Diallo works to press in a mid-block while Mazraoui provides width to help the team spread wide.
The attacking unit uses three players across the front to pressure the opposition. J. Zirkzee acts as a lone striker who holds up the ball to allow others to join the attack. M. Rashford plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and look for goals. A. Garnacho operates on the right and looks to run in behind the defence. These three forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One advantage of this Man Utd formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with the front three and the wide midfielders. The team can also create wide overloads when the wide midfielders push up to support the wingers. This creates a lot of pressure on the opposing full backs.
This formation is designed to dominate games through high intensity and quick movement. It is best suited for matches against teams that try to play out from the back.
