SK Rapid plays a very direct and vertical brand of football using a 4-4-2. This formation is built to win the second ball and move the play forward through the lines as quickly as possible. The team aims to maintain compactness to trigger a press and strike effectively on the break.

GARTNER plays in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four that stays close together to deny the turn. HANAPPI works as a right back to cover the flank, while HALLA plays as the left back. In the middle, KAFFKA and HOLTL form the central pair. KAFFKA and HOLTL must win the header and clear the lines when the opposition crosses the ball. The defensive unit stays disciplined to hold the line and force the ball wide.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to control the center of the pitch. R. KORNER and RIEGLER act as the central pairing to shield the defence and win the second ball. RIEGLER looks to pick up runners and cover the space if the line is breached. LENZINGER works on the left to provide service, whereas DIENST occupies the right side to track back and support the full backs. This group works to squeeze the space and recycle possession to keep the opposition under pressure.

The attacking unit relies on two forwards in a partnership to lead the press. PROBST and A. KORNER work together as a strike duo to stretch the defence. PROBST acts as a pressing centre-forward to press the goalkeeper and force a long ball. A. KORNER looks to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind the back line. The forwards aim to combine in tight spaces and use the width provided by the wingers to hit the opposition on the transition.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the lines close, SK Rapid can squeeze the space and make it hard for opponents to play through the lines. The team also benefits from wide overloads when LENZINGER or DIENST overlap the full backs to create crossing opportunities. This formation allows for a very fast speed of transition when the ball is won back.

This 4-4-2 formation relies on a direct and high intensity identity. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to sit deep and counter at pace against teams that hold more possession.
