Lecce aims to play a very defensive and compact game using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to deny space in the middle and force the opposition to play wide. The team looks to sit deep and wait for the right moment to hit in behind on the transition.
In goal, number 1 acts as the last line of defense for Lecce. The back line functions as a flat back four with number 3 at left back and number 2 at right back. The central defenders, number 4 and number 5, must hold the line and stay close to prevent any runs between them. Number 4 and number 5 are tasked to win the second ball and cover for the wide players if they push up. The whole defensive unit works to squeeze the space and maintain a narrow defensive block.
The midfield is heavily populated with a five man unit to control the center of the pitch. Number 6 and number 8 form a double pivot to shield the defense. Number 6 works to deny the pivot of the opponent while number 8 seeks to intercept passes and carry the ball forward. The three central midfielders, number 7, number 10, and number 11, connect the defense and attack. Number 10 drops into the hole to receive on the half-turn, while number 7 and number 11 make late runs into the box to support the lone forward.
The attack is built around a lone striker, number 9, who acts as a pressing centre-forward. Number 9 needs to pin the last defender and hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move up the pitch. Since the formation is narrow, the team relies on the midfielders to arrive late into the box or make runs in behind. The attacking unit works to break quickly once the ball is won. Number 9 must find the feet of his teammates or lay it off to players like number 10 to keep the pressure on.
One major tactical advantage for this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. Having number 6, number 8, number 7, number 10, and number 11 makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. This creates a massive block that is difficult to break. Another strength is the ability to maintain compactness when defending, which forces the opposition to go direct or try to cross from wide areas.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a very solid platform for Lecce to defend. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams where the goal is to sit deep and counter at pace.
