Starting Lineup

Unión (SF) relies on a heavy defensive foundation within a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid, sitting deep to deny space between the lines. The team looks to absorb pressure before hitting teams quickly in transition.

Cardozo stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit functions as a back five, with Torren acting as the central defender to win headers and clear the lines. Corvalan and Pardo sit on either side of Torren to defend zonally. Vargas and Del Blanco act as attacking wing backs to provide width when the team has the ball, but they must track back to form a narrow defensive block when out of possession. The back line stays compact to make it hard for the opposition to find gaps.

The midfield works to bridge the gap between the defence and the two forwards. Pitton and Mosqueira work in the middle to protect the back five and win the second ball. They sit in front of the defenders to deny the pivot and cut off the passing lane. Rivero plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines. Rivero is responsible for carrying the ball forward and finding the feet of the strikers.

Up front, Unión (SF) employs two forwards in a partnership. Balboa and Orsini work together to stretch the defence. Balboa can act as a target man to hold up the ball, while Orsini looks to make runs in behind the last defender. The attack relies on the width provided by Vargas and Del Blanco to create chances via crosses. When the team wins the ball, they look to break quickly, with the wing backs pushing up to overlap the midfielders and spread wide.

This formation offers great compactness when defending. By having five players in the back line, the team can easily double up on wide attackers. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads because Vargas and Del Blanco can push high up the pitch. The central trio of Pitton, Mosqueira, and Rivero allows the team to squeeze the space in the middle and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

This 5-3-2 formation is a hard unit to break down. It is best suited for matches against teams that control possession and play with high wide players.
