Starting Lineup

Baumgartner · Wimmer · Seiwald · Stöger · Sabitzer · Prass · Laimer · Lienhart · Posch · Pentz · Grillitsch

Austria focuses on high pressing and rapid verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch and use an aggressive attacking presence to stretch the opposition. By committing so many players forward, the team aims to dominate the central areas and create constant chaos in the final third.

Pentz stays between the posts to guard the goal as the team operates with a very high line. The defensive unit relies on only two central defenders, Posch and Lienhart, who must be ready to cover large spaces. Lienhart acts as a ball playing defender to initiate play, while Posch provides strength and reads the game to intercept passes. Because the back line is so small, they must squeeze the space and act as the first line of defense against long balls.

A massive five man midfield controls the center of the pitch to manage both transition and possession. Laimer and Prass operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and win second balls. Seiwald and Grillitsch occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Seiwald working to drive forward with the ball. Stöger sits in the advanced hole as the playmaker, looking to split the defense with a through ball or deliver a pass to the attackers.

The attacking trident is designed to pin the last defender and attack the space behind the back line. Baumgartner acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the hunt for the ball. Wimmer and Sabitzer play as wide wingers, with Wimmer looking to cut inside to create numbers in the middle. Sabitzer uses his driving runs to join the attack, creating combinations in tight spaces with Baumgartner to force the opposition into errors.

Austria gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield. This allows them to compress the midfield and make it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. They also create wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to stretch the defense. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes them very dangerous during transitions.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through aggressive ball winning and high intensity. It is most effective against opponents that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
