Starting Lineup

CAVIA · YAÑEZ · TERRUSI · AQUINO · CALGARO · TAMAY · CACERES · CAMPOS · MAIDANA · TREVISAN · SAUCEDO

Nueva Chicago relies on a high press and a hard to break down defensive block using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch and force the opposition into wide areas. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and use quick transitions to catch the opponent out of position.

TREVISAN works between the posts to organize the back line. The defense sits in a flat back four where SAUCEDO and MAIDANA act as the central pair. SAUCEDO is tasked with covering the space behind the line while MAIDANA uses his aerial strength to defend crosses. CAMPOS and CACERES play as wide defenders to hold the line and prevent crosses from coming in. When the team loses possession, the unit moves together to maintain a compact defensive block.

The midfield operates as a five man unit to control the central zones. TAMAY sits in front of the defense as a single pivot to shield the back four and intercept passes. CALGARO and YAÑEZ function as two central midfielders who press aggressively to win the second ball. AQUINO and TERRUSI occupy the half spaces as attacking midfielders to link the midfield and the attack. This group works to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

CAVIA operates as a lone striker and stays high to pin the last defender. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to push forward. AQUINO and TERRUSI support him by making runs into the box from deep. The team attacks by spreading wide to create width and then looking to find CAVIA in tight spaces. When the ball is won back, the wingers and central midfielders look to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Nueva Chicago is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to disrupt the build up play of the opponent. The midfield setup also provides great compactness when defending deep in their own half. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes between the lines.

This formation is designed to frustrate teams that want to keep possession. Nueva Chicago is best suited for matches against dominant sides where they can sit deep and strike on the break.
