Accrington Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Heidi · Ava · Bella · Ellie · Justine · Lou · Dave · Anna · Mia · Meg · EmilyAccrington look to play with a high press and verticality through a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the opposition quickly. By using this lineup, the team aims to stretch the defence and create constant pressure in the final third.
Heidi stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back four functions as a flat line, with Ellie and Bella acting as the central defenders. Bella and Ellie work together to win the second ball and cover for one another when the line steps up. On the flanks, Justine and Ava act as full backs. Justine looks to overlap the winger to provide width, while Ava stays more cautious to prevent runners from getting behind. The unit works together to squeeze the space and force long balls.
The midfield operates with a three man midfield where Anna plays as the attacking ten behind the striker. Lou and Dave occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Dave works to drive forward with the ball and carry the ball forward into the half spaces, while Lou focuses on recycling possession and shielding the defence. Anna sits just behind the front three to find the feet of the striker and play through the lines. This group is tasked with pressing in a mid-block to regain control.
The attacking unit consists of three attackers across the front. Emily leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, constantly looking to pin the last defender. On the wings, Mia and Meg act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring chances. This movement allows Justine and Ava to push higher up the pitch. The team builds play through combinations in tight spaces, with Meg and Mia looking to pull wide before cutting in to deliver early balls into the box for Emily.
Accrington possess several tactical advantages with this lineup. The team can create wide overloads from the overlapping full backs, which forces the opposition to shift constantly. They also benefit from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press. This setup creates significant pressure on the opposition's build up play.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick transitions to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
