River Football Formation

Starting Lineup

River focuses on direct attacking play and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to strike hard on the break while staying compact when the opposition has the ball. The team looks to catch opponents off guard by using the width of the pitch and the speed of the forwards to exploit gaps in the backline.

Armani stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a back five with three central defenders. Villagra acts as the central man to hold the line, while P. Díaz and Gattoni sit on either side to cover the space. Casco plays as the left wing back to provide width and support the attack, whereas Bustos works as the right wing back to push up the flank. This defensive block can sit deep to deny space or step up to squeeze the play.

The midfield functions with a two man unit consisting of Meza and Simón. These two work to protect the central zone and win the second ball. Meza and Simón must cover a lot of ground to link the defense to the front three. One midfielder often drops deeper to shield the back five, while the other attempts to carry the ball forward to support the attacking transition. They must be ready to intercept passes and immediately find the wide players to start a move.

In the final third, River employs three attackers to stretch the opposition. Colidio acts as the lone striker, looking to find space between defenders and link up with the wide players. Echeverri plays on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and create chances, while Mastantuono operates on the right to provide similar threat. The wing backs, Casco and Bustos, provide the extra width needed to pull defenders apart, creating space for Colidio to receive the ball or for the wingers to run in behind.

This formation offers significant advantages in transition. The presence of three attackers allows River to hit opponents in behind very quickly. The wing backs create wide overloads that force the opposing full backs into difficult decisions. By having five defenders, the team maintains compactness when they drop into a low block, making it very hard for opponents to play through the middle.
