Manchester United aim to play a vertical game focused on directness and heavy pressure using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to attack with massive numbers in the final third and force the opposition into errors through constant pressure. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence and create openings for the strikers.

The goalkeeper 1 stays alert to command the area and play short from the back to start the attack. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four with 2 and 3 as the full backs. 2 and 3 must be ready to overlap the winger or track back to defend against counters. In the center, 5 and 6 act as the primary defenders to defend zonally and win the header. 5 and 6 need to hold the line and ensure the team does not get caught by runs in behind.

In the middle of the pitch, a double pivot consisting of 4 and 7 provides the connection between the lines. 4 and 7 must work to shield the defence and win the second ball in the middle third. 4 often looks to sit deep to deny the pivot of the opposition, while 7 is expected to carry the ball forward and drive into space. They must be able to intercept passes and quickly switch play to the wide areas to keep the attack moving.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive with two forwards in a partnership. 9 and 10 work together to pin the last defender and find the feet of the striker during combinations. On the wings, 8 and 11 act as wide wingers who spread wide to stretch the defence. 11 and 8 will often cut inside to create more central presence or to whip it in towards the box. The front four are tasked to press from the front to trigger a press high up the pitch.

One major advantage of this 4-2-4 formation is the speed of transition when the team wins possession. With 8, 11, 9, and 10 already positioned high, Man Utd can break quickly and hit in behind on the transition. The formation also allows for wide overloads if the full backs 2 and 3 move up to support the wingers. This creates difficult situations for the opposition to defend.

This Manchester United formation is a high risk, high reward way to play aggressive attacking football. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to overwhelm a low block or chase a goal.
