Seeking to control the center of the pitch through high density, São Paulo operates in a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and recycle possession while waiting for the right moment to break quickly. The team relies on a heavy central presence to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain control.

Jandrei stays on his line to protect the goal as the defensive unit stays compact. The back four consists of Igor Felisb. at right back and J. Lewis at left back, both tasked with holding the line unless the ball is switched wide. Ferraresi and Sabino act as the central pair, with Ferraresi using his aerial strength to defend set pieces. The defensive unit works together to deny the turn to opposing attackers and force long balls.

The midfield functions as a five man block designed to compress the midfield and win the second ball. M. Antônio and T. Mendes act as a double pivot to shield the defence and protect the center backs. In front of them, G. Galoppo, W. Rato, and W. Gomes operate as three central midfielders who press in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch. This group is tasked to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back and moving the ball through the thirds.

Up top, André Silva acts as a lone striker to lead the press from the front. He works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders who arrive late into the box. The attack is built through combinations in the half spaces rather than relying on wide wingers. André Silva must often pin the last defender to create space for the midfielders to make runs in behind.

A primary strength of this São Paulo lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the tempo. The presence of five central players makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the team can shift quickly between a mid-block and a high press to disrupt the opposition build up.

This 4-5-1 formation is designed to dominate the central areas and frustrate opponents who rely on passing through the middle. It is best suited for matches against teams that lack physical presence in the center and struggle to cope with a crowded midfield.
