Starting Lineup

Frendrup · Fofana · Rijenders · Leao · Pulisic · Morata · Theo · Royal · Tomori · Thiaw · Maignan

Milan aims to play with high intensity and directness using a 4-3-3. This formation is built to play with a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly hit the opposition in transition. The goal is to use the speed of the attackers to stretch the defence and create chances through rapid vertical play.

Maignan operates between the posts to command his area and start attacks with quick distribution. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four where Theo plays as an attacking full back to provide width. In the middle of the defence, Tomori and Thiaw act as the central duo, with Tomori often using his recovery speed to cover behind while Thiaw provides aerial strength. Royal handles the right side to balance the width provided by the wingers.

The midfield operates with a three-man midfield with a carrier to control the tempo. Frendrup sits as the single pivot to shield the defence and break up play. Beside him, Fofana drives forward with the ball to carry it into the half spaces. Rijenders plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box to score. This trio connects the defensive line to the front three by recycling possession and progressing through the thirds.

Milan uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Leao plays as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to use his dribbling style to create chaos. On the right, Pulisic operates as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside and shoot or play through the lines. Morata acts as the lone striker and a pressing centre-forward, working to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines for the oncoming midfielders.

This lineup offers significant advantages through its speed of transition and the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using wide players like Leao and Pulisic, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations to break the lines. The presence of Fofana and Rijenders allows the team to win the second ball and quickly switch play to the flanks.

This 4-3-3 formation focuses on aggressive pressing and rapid attacking movements. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
